Template:CountryInfoMa Clique (Ma Family Army) or Xibei San Ma (西北三马, Three Mas of the Northwest) is a general historiographical term/collective name for
Hui Muslim warlords in Northwestern China who held absolute control over the provinces of
Qinghai,
Gansu, and
Ningxia starting from 1919 until 1928. There were three families in the Ma clique ("Ma" being a common Hui rendering of the common Muslim name "Muhammad"), each of them respectively controlled, parts of Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai.
The Three Mas were "Southern Mas" controlling Qinghai, "Northern Mas" in Ningxia and Gansu, and those of
Ma Anliang who had no territory. The three Ma families are not directly related.
History
The Ma clique was begun by
Muslim generals who served in the military of the
Qing Dynasty, most notably in the
Kansu Braves army, who fought in the
Boxer Rebellion against invading
foreign forces. He was continued by two generations of their descendants.
Following the collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1912, the region came under Hui warlord
Ma Qi's control.
