Austria is a country located in Europe. He has been a member of the United Nations since 1955 and of the European Union since 1995. Austria hosts organizations, like the OSCE and the OPEC. He is a founding member of the OECD and Interpol. It also signed the Schengen Agreement in 1995, and adopted the euro currency in 1999.

History

Austria was occupied by the Allies after German defeat in WWII. He officially regained independence in 1955 and joined the UN. Austria would remain neutral in the Cold War, while maintaining close economic ties to the West, he avoided joining any military alliance like NATO. Austria became a bridge between Eastern and Western Europe, hosting international organizations and conferences. After the Cold War, Austria began joining the West more, an example of such feelings is the joining of the European Union.

People

Austrians are a homogeneous people; 91% are native German speakers. However, there has been a significant amount of immigrants, particularly from former Yugoslavia and Turkey, over the last two decades.

• 2/3 of the country is covered in mountains. 🏔️
• The name "Austria" derives from a Germanic word 'austro' which means 'east'.
• Even though Austria's coat of arms includes a hammer and sickle, it does not actually symbolize Communism. Also, the coat of arms includes a crown, which symbolizes Monarchism.
