Paradichlorobenzene, or 1,4-Dichlorobenzene (C₆H₄Cl₂), is an organic aryl chloride benzene that includes two chlorine atoms in Chlorobenzene (the most important isomer of dichlorobenzene, before Ortodichlorobenzene and Metadichlorobenzene). He is colorless solid with strong characteristic odor, and does not occur naturally.

Paradichlorobenzene is associated with a popular song with the same name that is sung by Kagamine Len, his personality and even design is heavily based on it. 1,4-Dichlorobenzene is nihilistic and doesn't care about everything, expect for paradichlorobenzene himself. Sometimes, paradichlorobenzene censor stylistically the name in asterisks. If it's shorter (****), then it mentions Benzene. The ten asterisk (**********) obviously means paradichlorobenzene.

History

Paradichlorobenzene was first described in scientific literature from 1864, while his cousins were discovered later in 1875.

Around 1915, in United States, paradichlorobenzene was produced commercially into mothballs and urine cakes. Later in 1947, he was registered by United States Department of Agriculture, but he wasn't a standard until 1990s.

Due to his carcinogenic nature, the usage of paradichlorobenzene was prohibited in European Union as an air freshener (since 2005) and in mothballs (since 2008).

This compound was popularized, especially in Vocaloid community, since 19 September 2009 when Owata-P's song "Paradichlorobenzene" was released.

Paradichlorobenzene can be produced by chlorination of benzene using ferric chloride as a catalyst.

Usage

Disinfectant, Deodorant, & Pesticide

Paradichlorobenzene is used to control moths, molds, and mildew.

The compound is also used in urinal cakes as disinfectant.

Together with Benzocaine, Chlorbutol and Turpentine Oil, it's used to soften and remove excess or impacted cerumen (earwax)

Recreational Use

There were some cases, even fatal, when paradichlorobenzene was huffed though urinal cakes. Notably, Kagamine Len is addicted from paradichlorobenzene.

Precursor to Other Chemicals

Though nitration, paradichlorobenzene can be formed into Nitro-Paradichlorobenzene, which is used in dyes and pigments.

Though more expose to chlorization, paradichlorobenzene can be formed into 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene which is used as a solvent for a variety of compounds and materials.

Paradichlorobenzene is also used to obtain Polyphenylene Sulfide though reaction with Sodium Sulfide.

Dangers

Biodegradability

Paradichlorobenzene is poorly soluble in Water and isn't soluble either for soil organisms (except for bacteria Rhodococcus phenolicus which can degrade as the compound's sole carbon source).

Toxicity

As determined by United States Department of Health and Human Services and International Agency for Research on Cancer, paradichlorobenzene is carcinogenic. The compound was indicated on animals, but full-scale human tests weren't done.

Paradichlorobenzene (パラジクロロベンゼン) is a song composed by Owata-P featuring Vocaloid Kagamine Len. It is titled "Destructive-Type Brainwashing Song" (破壊系洗脳ソング; Hakai-kei Sennou Songu) It quickly gained popularity, reaching over 5 million views and topping the Weekly VOCALOID Ranking for two consecutive weeks.

This song represents the Benzene Series, which according to original author it doesn't have any meaning and it's free to implementation. It is compared together with 2010 song Antichlorobenzene, as it's the antithesis of this song.
