Sintashta Culture
Sintashta Culture, also known as Sintashta-Petrovka Culture or Sintashta-Arkaim Culture, was an ancient chariot riding and
warring culture in the
Southern Ural, named after the site
Sintashta. He had the earliest known chariots, found in his burials, and is considered a strong candidate for the origin of the technology, which spread throughout the Old World and played an important role in ancient warfare. These people likely invented the chariot, or at least, developed it into a full-blown war machine.
Sintashta was a relatively short culture, lasting only 300 to 400 years. Sintashta lived in fortified settlements near the river valleys and marshes where his herds of
cattle, sheep, and horses graze. He was the first to do metal-working on the Eurasian steppe. Sintashta was full of many walled cities that are
industrial centers complete with rooms. All domesticated horses today are descendants from the type Sintashta bred, because they were so successful.
Sintashta was keen on smithing, which is why he settled close to
copper deposits, unusual for a steppe culture. He came out of a time period filled with
violence, and because of that he was a hardened warrior. He combined his knack for craftsmanship and battle to create the tool which would revolutionize warfare across the world, the spoke-wheeled chariot. These chariots would go on to revolutionize warfare from
Egypt to
China. And most importantly, this culture is the most likely urheimat of the
Indo-Iranian Languages, the most widespread branch of
Indo-European Languages (well until
English won the game of languages).
History
Sintashta Culture emerged from the
Corded Ware Culture further west around 2200 BC, also influenced by the neighboring but distinct
Abashevo Culture. From this time to around 2100 BC, fortified settlements begin appearing across the steppe, especially near river valleys.
Arkaim,
Sintashta, and other sites are founded. They are circular, with walls, gates, and moatsβunusually complex for steppe societies. Burial mounds begin showing elaborate
warrior graves, with weapons,
horses, and early chariots. Advanced
copper and
bronze metallurgy workshops appear.
From 2100 BC to 2000 BC, the first known chariots with spoked wheels appear in burials. There was also large-scale metallurgy and weapon production (bronze spearheads, arrowheads, axes). Settlement planning shows proto-urban features, such as standardized houses, public altars, and communal grain storage.
religious practices also evolve:
fire altars, animal sacrifices, and complex burial rites hint at the belief systems of them and surroundings.
From 2000 BC onwards, the culture became highly
militarized. Fortresses grow in scale and number and intertribal wars increase. Sintashta
elites dominate surrounding regions with chariot warfare, establishing control over trade routes and metal resources. Contact increases with neighboring cultures to the west (
Abashevo,
Srubnaya) and south (
Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex). Likely around this time that early migrations or raids into Central Asia begin.
In circa 1900 BC, Sintashta starts blending with eastern territories, morphing into the
Andronovo cultural horizon. Increasing mobility and migration lead to the decline of fixed fortresses. Sintasta Culture moves to modern-day
India and
Iran, becoming new peoples.
Trivia
- Sintashta
Elites were buried sometimes in flat graves, sometimes under mounds of various sizes, one such mound was 85 meters in diameter and 15 meters high. - Sometimes up to 8 horses are buried with the Sintashta elites.
Chariots and weaponry were also buried with them, instead of
wealth. - Because of the difficulty of identifying the remains of Sintashta sites beneath those of later settlements, the culture was only distinguished in the 1990s from the
Andronovo Culture.
