Suwa (諏訪市; Suwa-shi) is a town located in Nagano Prefecture, Japan.
History
This section also includes a part of
Touhou lore since it influenced
Suwa city itself.
Ancient
Around 2300 ages ago (from 2007 when the MoF took place, so circa 293 BC), Suwako (myth. Moreya) and
Kanako (myth. Takeminakata and Yasakatome) were born in Suwa.
Suwako is presumably older than
Kanako.
Takeminakata is a god and a son of Ōkuninushi who was forced to exile in the "sea of Suwa in the land of Shinano". He is married to Yasakatome. Together, they founded the Suwa clan.
Moreya is a god and mythical ancestor of the Moriya clan. He is sometimes compared with Mononobe no Moriya who fought against Prince Shotoku.
The exact date of the foundation of the Grand Shrine of Suwa is unknown. Nihon Shoki mentions that the shrine already existed in the late 7th century. This shrine is made up of two main shrine on two sides of the lake: Upper Shrine (上社; Kamisha), located in Suwa, and
Chino while Lower Shrine (下社; Shimosha) located in
Shimosuwa.
The local Suwa clan has controlled Suwa since ancient times. While ōhōri, a young boy considered to be a reincarnation of Takeminakata, was officially the chief priest of the Upper Shrine, de facto jinchōkan organized everything.
Great Suwa War
The Great Suwa War happened in the Yamato period, approximately between mid-4th and late 6th century AD.
Suwako Moriya, the native God of Suwa, ruled the Moriya community by controlling Mishaguji capable of cursing and punishing those who disregarded him.
Kanako Yasaka, on the other hand, was on
Yamato side.
Initially, Suwako dominated through iron weaponry (this can be seen through her iron rings). The tide changed when
Kanako held a thin wisteria vine against Suwako's army, making the entire army rusty. Suwako had no choice but to surrender.
Kanako Yasaka became the goddess of the Moriya community after her victory. Kanako allowed
Suwako to be in her shrine. However, people rejected the new goddess. Kanako knew people were unhappy about that, so she created the artificial god Moriya. The god was called differently outside the Moriyan community. Kanako, no longer having to be the god of the Moriya community, secretly became the goddess of the mountains.
Assuming Sanae Kochiya is similarly old as Reimu, she was born circa 1988. Her descendant is
Suwako, although Sanae did not know this fact before.
Around 2003, when Sanae went to high school,
Kanako decided to move their shrine from Outside World to Youkai Mountain in Gensokyo to gain more faith. It was caused by the fact that people on the
Earth believed in gods less and less, especially in urbanized areas.
Kanako Yasaka tried to industrialize Gensokyo many times by giving Utsuho Reiuji the ability of nuclear fusion.
Since the release of Mountain of Faith in 2007, people have prayed to these gods by drawing their images in ema, as shown here.
Feudal
City
Suwa town was founded on August 10, 1941, combining Kamisuwa, Toyoda, and Shiga villages.
