Historie (History)
After the dissolution of the Denmark-Norway union in 1814, Denmark focused on consolidating its territory and modernizing its economy. However, he suffered a significant setback with the loss of territory to
Prussia and
Austria in the Second Schleswig War (1864), leading to the cession of the Duchies of
Schleswig,
Holstein, and
Saxe-Lauenburg.
Denmark transitioned into a
constitutional monarchy from 1864-1914, with the adoption of a liberal constitution in 1849. The country experienced industrialization and economic growth, particularly in agriculture, trade, and manufacturing. Social reforms, such as the introduction of welfare programs and labor rights, also took place.
Denmark remained neutral during World War I but was occupied by
Germany during World War II, from 1940 to 1945. The occupation brought hardship and resistance, culminating in the Danish rescue of most of its
Jewish population during the Holocaust.
After World War II, Denmark underwent rapid reconstruction and economic development. It became a founding member of the
United Nations and
NATO. In 1973, Denmark joined the
European Economic Community (EEC), which later became the
European Union (EU).
