Reading RationalWiki feels like being lectured by a smug teenager who just discovered atheism.
— General criticism of RationalWiki
RationalWiki, officially the RationalMedia Foundation and sometimes known as RationalWikism (to make it sound more like an ideology), is a progressive and anti-Theist ideology that represents the views of a wiki of the same name. He likes to abuse the term “ pseudoscience” and uses it to refer to any non-mainstream scientific ideas (very irrational). The articles on the wiki is usually unprofessional and satircal to the topics which he deems as “ pseudoscience”, and is always written with the most smug liberal Redditor tone and terminology.
RationalWiki, due to their excessive contradictions and abuses, such as the abuse of the term " pseudoscience" (as stated before) and other "pseudothing" concepts, is usually referred as IrrationalWiki.
History
RationalWiki was created by a group of immature adults who enjoyed vandalizing other wikis, like Conservapedia and Wikipedia. They basically created RationalWiki to publish what the other wikis wouldn’t allow them to publish. Though the triggering event of the wiki’s creation was on April 2007, when Dr. Peter Lipson, an internal medicine physician, attempted to edit Conservapedia's article on breast cancer to include evidence countering the claim that abortion was linked to the disease. Conservapedia administrators questioned Lipson's credentials and shut down the debate. After his edits were reverted and he was blocked, Lipson and several other contributors and trolls stopped trying to moderate the articles on Conservapedia and instead started their own website, RationalWiki.
Before 2010, RationalWiki's domains were registered to Trent Toulouse, and the wiki was hosted from a server in his home. In 2010, Trent Toulouse incorporated the “nonprofit organization” RationalWiki Foundation Inc. to manage the website's affairs and cover operational expenses. In July 2013, the RationalWiki Foundation changed its name to the RationalMedia Foundation, stating that its aims extended beyond the RationalWiki site alone.
The RationalWiki website experienced a significant decline in web traffic during the latter part of 2019 and throughout most of the first half of 2020. By January 2022, RationalWiki.org's global web traffic ranking was also dropping. In the latter part of 2022, the site lost a substantial portion of its referral traffic from Google.
On May 29, 2022, one of the founders of the RationalWiki website indicated "Currently the donations we get are sparse… We have not done a donation drive in a long time and have not been self-supporting for over a year…". A global fundraising scam, Rationalwiki has not complied with non-profit reporting requirements for 7 consecutive years.
In June of 2022, the RationalWiki admin GrammarCommie said that RationalWiki was "half dead". In reply, the RationalWiki user 2friedeggs said: "This site is dying for a reason" and he indicated that GrammarCommie was chasing good faith editors away. In addition, in June of 2022, RationalWiki user Neiltyson1fan called RationalWiki a "zombie wiki".
Beliefs
RationalWiki is completely against religion and spirituality, and seeks to counter any and every religious and spiritual ideas, and even metaphysical and extraphysical ideas. RationalWiki claims to be politically neutral but everyone can see that it is far, far from the truth. Moreover, RationalWiki is heavy reliance on snark and condescension, often prioritizing ridicule over factual analysis. The site is accused of being a far-left echo chamber, where opposing viewpoints are frequently dismissed or misrepresented. His editorial stance is often seen as hypocritical. While he champions skepticism, he rarely applies the same level of scrutiny to his own biases and assumptions. This selective skepticism raises questions about his “commitment” to genuine critical thinking.
