Ancient
Historical Context
The exact date of the foundation of the Grand Shrine of Suwa is unknown. Nihon Shoki mentions that the shrine already existed in the late 7th century. This shrine is made up of two main shrine on two sides of the lake: Upper Shrine (上社; Kamisha), located in Suwa Suwa, and Chino Chino while Lower Shrine (下社; Shimosha) located in Shimosuwa Shimosuwa.
The area of Suwa city were habited since Paleolithic Japan Paleolithic era. The Grand Shrine of Suwa (existing since the 7th century) consists of two sites on Lake Lake Suwa: the Upper Shrine in Suwa and Chino Chino, and the Lower Shrine in Shimosuwa Shimosuwa. Suwa Clan Suwa Clan controlled these area since Nara Period Nara Period (710-794), with a symbolic child priest (ōhōri) considered a reincarnation of the god War Takeminakata, and real authority held by the position of jinchōkan.

The local Suwa clan has controlled Suwa since ancient times. While ōhōri, a young boy considered to be a reincarnation of Takeminakata, was officially the chief priest of the Upper Shrine, de facto jinchōkan organized everything.
According to legend, during the Yamato Yamato period, the god Takeminakata fought and defeated the iron-wielding goddess Suwako Moriya Moreya using a wisteria vine, leading to his worship in the region as a mountain god. Despite Politics political changes, the shrine remained important. During the two Yuan Mongol invasions of Kamakura Japan in 1274 and 1281, Takeminakata supported Japan. The Takeda Takeda Clan conquered Suwa in 1542, but valued Takeminakata. Later, under the Tokugawa Tokugawa Shogunate, the Suwa clan returned to power and ruled the Suwa domain. But, the Meiji Meiji reforms in 1868 ended Suwa's priestly authority. During the post-Meiji reformations, on 1 April 1889, village of Kamisuwa Kamisuwa was founded. On 20 April 1891, Kamisuwa got elevated to town status. After merging with Japan Shiga and Japan Toyoda villages, Kamisuwa became the Suwa city on 10 August 1941.

Legend about the war
City
The war happened in the Yamato Yamato period, approximately between mid-4th and late 6th century AD. Potentially, it was a conflict between the Moriya and Suwa clans.
Suwa city was officially formed on 10 August 1941 when Kamisuwa Kamisuwa merged with the villages of Japan Shiga and Japan Toyoda.

Moreya is a god and mythical ancestor of the Moriya clan who controlled Mishaguji which curses and punishes those who disregarded him. He is sometimes compared with Mononobe no Moriya who fought against Prince Shotoku.
The last Suwa ōhōri died in 2002.

Takeminakata, on the other hand, is a god and a son of Ōkuninushi who was forced to exile in the "sea of Suwa in the land of Shinano". He is married to Yasakatome. Together, they founded the Suwa clan. Takeminakata was on Yamato Yamato side
When the Touhou Touhou Project Mountain of Faith was released in 17 August 2007, Suwa has became more popular because of the Moriya Shrine owned by gods Kanako Yasaka Kanako Yasaka, Suwako Moriya Suwako Moriya and the shrine maiden Sanae Kochiya Sanae Kochiya. The Moriya Shrine is based on the real-life Suwa Clan Suwa Grand Shrine.

Initially, Moreya dominated through iron weaponry (this can be seen through her iron rings). Everything changed when Takeminakata held a thin wisteria vine against Suwako's army, rusting the entire army. Moreya had no choice but to surrender.
Climate
Suwa has a climate characterized by hot and humid Summer summers, and relatively mild but cold Winter winters. The average annual temperature in the city is 11.4 °C (52.5 °F), while the average annual rainfall is 1,301.5 mm (51.24 in) with July as the wettest month. The temperatures are highest on average in August, at around 24.1 °C (75.4 °F), and lowest in January, at around −1.1 °C (30.0 °F).

After her victory, Takeminakata became the goddess of the Moriya community. However, people rejected the new goddess. Knowing people were unhappy, Takeminakata called the god Moriya. Without having to maintain the Moriya community, Takeminakata secretly became the goddess of the mountains.
