The People’s Republic of Korea was a short-lived provisional government established in Korea after the surrender of Empire of Japan in WWII.
History
On 15 August 1945, the Empire of Japan surrendered to the Allied Powers in Korea. Soviet Union continued fighting Japan in Chongjin, a key northern port city. With the Soviet Red Army occupying the northern part of Korea and the U.S. taking control of the south, the Korean peninsula was divided along the 38th parallel, setting the stage for future tensions .
