Polish People's Republic
Polish People's Republic, also sometimes known as the People's Republic of Poland, was a
Soviet
puppet state in Poland. He was part of the
communist satellite states in
Eastern Europe known as the
Warsaw Pact. The
Polish United Workers' Party was the
single ruling party.
PR Poland is actually quite calm and
liberal compared to the rest of the Warsaw Pact members, not going as extreme, at least allowing
Catholicism to exist. He has relatively good relations with the
West when Soviet isn't poking his nose around him.
History
Polish PR was not the first
communist government set up in Poland, but he was the one that lasted the longest. He was formed after the
Provisional Government of National Unity disbanded in 1947.
With the polite fiction of postwar unity out of the way and the non-communist opposition neatly shoved aside (harassed, jailed, or exiled), PR Poland could finally breathe a deep sigh of
totalitarian relief. Backed by
Stalin's fist, the
Polish United Workers' Party (PZPR) became the sole
political driver, and their plan,
industrialization,
collectivization, and ideological purification, weren't much different from the plans of other Soviet
puppet states.
The late 1940s and early 1950s were PR Poland's hardcore
Communist phase. He had
secret police, rigged trials, nationalized everything, and statues of
Comrade Joe popping up like mushrooms. The
economy?
Centrally planned and proudly inefficient. The people? Hungry, tired, and increasingly suspicious. But the state? Oh, the state was very enthusiastic.
In 1956, there was a bit of a wobble. Stalin was dead and
Khrushchev was denouncing him. All across
Eastern Europe, satellites were quaking. In Poland, the workers in
PoznaΕ staged a major uprising against the communist government, because, surprise, they didn't appreciate working longer hours for less food. Tanks (390 tanks to be exact) were sent in, blood was spilled, and Poland had a bit of an identity crisis. 57-100 protestors were killed and 600 wounded.
In 1966 Poland celebrated the 1000th year anniversary since his
Christianization. This was called the "Millennium of the Polish State", and it was celebrated both by the
Polish government and the
Catholic Church, albeit with differing interpretations. The
atheist government focused on the
political and
national aspects, while the Church emphasized the
religious significance of the conversion to Christianity.
In 1968, Communist Poland claimed to fight
Zionism by exiling every person with a
Jewish-sounding name, and sometimes the destination was ironically
Israel. It was a state-led
antisemitic campaign disguised as an
anti-Zionist one that forced roughly 13,000-15,000 Polish Jews to leave between 1968 and 1971, crippling the remaining post-
Holocaust Jewish community.
On 4 June 1989, while
Communist China killed thousands of
protestors, Communist Poland decided to step down and allow
democracy, thus ending the People's Republic and starting the
Third Republic.
Trivia
- Polish PR was the last European country to expel
