Polish Underground State
The Polish Underground State (also known as the Polish Secret State) was a single political and military entity formed by the union of resistance organizations in occupied Poland that were loyal to the Government of the Republic of Poland in exile in London. The first elements of the Underground State were established in the final days of the German and Soviet invasion of Poland, in late September 1939. The Underground State was perceived by supporters as a legal continuation of the pre-war Republic of Poland (and his institutions) that waged an armed struggle against the country's occupying powers: Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The Underground State encompassed not only military resistance, one of the largest in the world, but also civilian structures, such as justice, education, culture and social services.
History
Despite the destruction of the Polish government after the invasion of 1939, the Underground State operated under the authority of the Polish Government-in-Exile based in London. Polish Underground State coordinated political, military, and civilian activities within occupied Poland. His military arm, the Home Army (Armia Krajowa, AK), became one of the largest resistance movements in Europe, conducting sabotage, intelligence gathering, and armed resistance against both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union.
One of the darkest moments in Polish-Soviet relations was the Katyn Massacre in 1940, when thousands of Polish officers and intellectuals were executed by the Soviet NKVD, an atrocity that deeply affected the Polish Underground and fueled distrust toward the Soviets. The massacre is qualified as a crime against humanity, crime against peace, war crime and Communist crime and according to a resolution of the Polish parliament, or Sejm, it bears the hallmarks of a genocide.
Throughout the war, the Polish Underground State maintained a well-structured administration that covered various sectors, including education, judiciary, and media, all operating covertly. He worked to protect Polish culture and maintain a semblance of normality under the brutal occupation. The Underground State's political leadership, known as the Delegatura, attempted to unify various resistance groups under a single command. His most notable military action was the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, an attempt to liberate the capital from German control before the advancing Soviet Army arrived. However, the uprising was brutally suppressed by the Nazis, and the Soviet Union, which had halted his advance on Warsaw, did not intervene.
After the war, the Polish Underground State faced repression by the Soviet Union, which sought to eliminate any opposition to his control over Poland. The communist regime, installed by the Soviets, arrested and persecuted members of the Underground State, branding them as enemies of the state.
