The Arab League or League of Arab States (LAS) is a regional organization of 🟒 Arabic-speaking countries that will soon 🟒 unite, mostly from the 🟒 Middle East, the 🟒 Horn of Africa, and 🟒 North Africa. He is also often used to represent the 🟒 Arab World in general. He likes 🟒 Islam, most of his members are Muslim, and hates 🟒 Zionism. 🟒 ISIS and 🟒 Israel are his main enemies.

History

Origins and Founding

The Arab League emerged from growing 🟒 pan-Arab sentiments and the adoption of the 🟒 Alexandria Protocol in 1944. Arab League was founded in 🟒 Cairo on 22 March 1945 to promote 🟒 political, 🟒 economic, and 🟒 cultural cooperation among Arab nations and safeguard their 🟒 independence. The original founding members who signed the Arab League Charter in 1945 were 🟒 Egypt, 🟒 Iraq, 🟒 Lebanon, 🟒 Saudi Arabia, 🟒 Syria, and 🟒 Transjordan (now 🟒 Jordan), with 🟒 Yemen joining shortly after.

Expansion and Early Focus

Military Pacts

In 1950, members signed the 🟒 Joint Defence and Economic Co-operation Treaty, committing to collective military defence and coordination.

Expansion

As 🟒 decolonization swept through 🟒 North Africa and the 🟒 Middle East, the League grew rapidly, welcoming new members such as 🟒 Libya (1953), 🟒 Sudan (1956), 🟒 Tunisia, 🟒 Morocco, 🟒 Kuwait, 🟒 Algeria, and several other 🟒 Gulf states.

The Palestinian Cause

A defining pillar of Arab League's political efforts has been the 🟒 Palestinian cause and getting rid of or at least weakening 🟒 Israel. The 🟒 Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) was admitted as a full member in 1976. This eventually culminated in the 2002 Arab 🟒 Peace Initiative.

Internal Divisions and Headquarters Moves

After 🟒 Egypt signed a peace treaty with 🟒 Israel in 1979, the Arab League voted to suspend Egypt's membership and relocated the headquarters from 🟒 Cairo to 🟒 Tunis, 🟒 Tunisia. Egypt was reinstated and the headquarters returned to Cairo in 1989.

21st Century and Regional Crises

During the uprisings in 2011, the League took an active political stance by suspending 🟒 Libya and 🟒 Syria due to the respective regimes' 🟒 violent actions against their citizens. 🟒 Libya was readmitted later in 2011, while Syria had his membership restored in 2023, marking a significant normalization of ties across the region.

Arab League has grown from his initial six founding members to 22 member states today.
