Ιστορία (History)
In 1974 Greece saw the end of his
military junta, leading to the return of
Konstantinos Karamanlis from exile to become prime minister, starting the Third Hellenic Republic. On 17 November, the anniversary of the
Athens Polytechnic uprising was celebrated, symbolizing
resistance to the junta rule. The new
democratic
constitution was adopted on 11 June 1975, establishing Greece as a
[[Parliamentarianism|parliamentary
republic, and
Michail Stasinopoulos was elected as president by the
Parliament on 15 June.
Greece's integration into the
European community began with his entry into the
European Economic Community (EEC) on 1 January 1981, becoming the 10th member. Later that same year,
Andreas Papandreou and the
Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) won the national elections, ushering in the first
socialist government in Greek
history.
In 1990,
Konstantinos Mitsotakis and the
New Democracy party won the national elections.
In 1996, Andreas Papandreou resigned as prime minister due to ill health on January 17, and
Costas Simitis succeeded him. Greece adopted the
Euro as his currency on the first day of 2001, replacing the drachma. Greece then hosted the
Summer Olympics in
Athens from 13-29 August 2004, which was significant since
Ancient Greece was the birthplace of the Olympic Games.
Kostas Karamanlis, the nephew of Konstantinos Karamanlis, became prime minister in 2004.
The financial landscape of Greece changed dramatically in October 2009 when
George Papandreou of PASOK became prime minister, and Greece revealed his budget deficit in December, triggering the Greek government-debt crisis. This led to Greece signing the first bailout agreement with the
EU and the
IMF on 2 May 2010, which involved stringent austerity measures.
Political instability in 2012 resulted in two rounds of national elections, one in May and another in June. The one in May did not produce a decisive outcome, leading to a second round in June, after which
Antonis Samaras of the New Democracy became prime minister by forming a coalition government. Greece had secured a second bailout agreement in February 2012, but further significant adjustments and decisions regarding this bailout were made in November 2012.
The year 2015 was significant as the
SYRIZA party won the national elections, and
Alexis Tsipras became prime minister. A crucial bailout referendum on 5 July resulted in a 'No' vote to the EU conditions, but Greece agreed to a third bailout package on 13 July after intense negotiations.
In 2017, Greece added a bunch of
socialistic policies, like granting everyone free college, free tuition, free books, free meals. But, since everyone was getting free things, nobody worked for anything and Greece went bankrupt. Greece exited his third and final bailout program on 20 August 2018.
In the 2019 national elections, New Democracy, led by
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, won, and Mitsotakis became prime minister. The COVID-19 pandemic hit Greece in March 2020, leading to lockdowns and various public health measures. In 2023, New Democracy won the national elections again, with Mitsotakis continuing as prime minister.
