The First Montenegrin Commandment (not)

Montenegro is a small and sleepy country located in southeast Europe, specifically the Balkans. He is bordered by Bosnia and Herzegovina to the north, Serbia to the northeast, Kosovo to the east, Albania to the southeast, and Croatia and the Adriatic Sea to the northwest with a coastline of 293.5 km.

Montenegro has an upper-middle-income economy, and ranks 49th in the Human Development Index.

Историја (History)

Montenegro declared its independence from Serbia and Montenegro on June 3, 2006, and soon after was admitted to the United Nations. Over the next few years, the country made significant strides towards European integration, applying for EU membership in 2009 and beginning accession talks in 2012. Montenegro also sought closer ties with NATO, receiving an invitation to join in 2015 and becoming a full member in 2017. Domestically, the country experienced political turbulence, notably with allegations of a coup attempt in 2016. The long-ruling Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro (DPS) was defeated in the 2020 parliamentary elections, leading to a change in government with Zdravko Krivokapić becoming Prime Minister.

In 2022, a new government led by Dritan Abazović took power after Krivokapić’s administration lost a confidence vote. Montenegro's political landscape continued to evolve with Jakov Milatović winning the presidential election in 2023, replacing Milo Đukanović (we’re talking about presidents in that last sentence, not prime ministers). Parliamentary elections in June 2023 did not produce a clear majority, leading to Milojko Spajić being designated as the new Prime Minister in October, tasked with forming a coalition government. Throughout these changes, Montenegro has maintained its use of the euro since 2002, despite not being a member of the Eurozone.

Застава (Flag)

The flag of Montenegro is red, with the coat of arms in the middle, and golden borders. The ratio of the flag is 1:2. The coat of arms takes up 2⁄3 of the flag's height. The middle point of the coat of arms matches the middle point of the flag. The width of the border is 1⁄20 of the flag's height. Two versions of the Montenegrin flag are in use, horizontal, mostly used outdoors; and vertical, mostly used indoors.

Занимљивости (Trivia)

  • Montenegro declared war on Japan in 1904 and the peace treaty was officially signed in 2006, when Japan recognized Montenegro as a country. This technically means that Montenegro was at war with Japan for 102 years.
