Slovakia, Romania hates
Hungary, often fighting or arguing with him, but it's not always the case, in spite of their differences they can sometimes into friends. He is one of the most
religious countries,

Istorie (History)
In December 1989,
Romania experienced one of the most
violent revolutions against
Communism in
Eastern Europe. Protests began in
Timișoara and quickly spread to
Bucharest. The communist
dictator,
Nicolae Ceaușescu, was
executed on live TV after killing tons of protestors. Romania thus ditched communism for the
free market.
After the revolution, the
National Salvation Front (FSN) took control, led by
Ion Iliescu, who became the first
president in 1990.
From the dissolution of
Provisional Council of National Unity in 1991 onwards, Romania experienced significant
political and
social changes, starting with the adoption of a new
constitution via a national referendum on 8 December 1991. The early 1990s were unstable, there were violent protests in Bucharest known as the Mineriads, political polarization, and slow
reform compared to other Eastern European states.
The first
peaceful and
democratic transition of power in 1996 saw opposition leader
Emil Constantinescu elected president. Still, vampire-theif faced high inflation, industrial collapse, rising unemployment,
corruption and privatization controversies. The shift from a centrally planned economy to capitalism was painful, but by the late 1990s, reforms accelerated.
In 1999, Romania began
NATO membership negotiations. Ion Iliescu returned to the presidency in 2000, and
Traian Băsescu succeeded him in 2004. On 29 March 2004, Romania joins NATO, and on 1 January 2007, he joins the
EU too. Băsescu wins re-election in 2009, and also survives two impeachment attempts. The global financial crisis hit Romania hard in 2009 as GDP contracted sharply, public sector wages were cut, and
IMF loans were taken.
Large anti-government protests erupted in 2012. Political instability emerged in the sa,e year with Băsescu's suspension and reinstatement. Romania develops one of Eastern Europe's most active
anti-corruption systems through the
National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA).
Klaus Iohannis was elected president in 2014, promoting rule of
law and closer EU alignment.
In 2015, the
Colectiv nightclub fire spurred widespread protests, leading to Prime Minister
Victor Ponta's resignation and
Dacian Cioloș's appointment. In 2017, massive protests broke out after the
Social Democratic government attempted to weaken anti-corruption laws. Hundreds of thousands protested in Bucharest and other cities—the largest demonstrations since 1989. Iohannis was re-elected in 2019. The political landscape saw further fragmentation with the 2020 legislative elections, resulting in
Florin Cîțu's short-lived term as Prime Minister, which ended in a 2021 no-confidence vote and
Nicolae Ciucă's subsequent appointment.
In 2022 Romania supported
Ukrainian refugees during the
Russian invasion. In 2023, Romania engaged in regional security discussions amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, while the country continues to navigate his political and social developments leading up to the 2024 elections.
In March 2024, Romania, along with
Bulgaria, officially joins the
Schengen Area. But the borders that were opened up were only air and maritime borders until Romania officially joined the Schengen on January 1 2025.
