Istorie (History)
From the dissolution of Provisional Council of National Unity in 1991 onwards, Romania experienced significant political and social changes, starting with the adoption of a new constitution via a national referendum on 8 December 1991. The peaceful transition of power in 1996 saw
Emil Constantinescu elected as President, succeeding
Ion Iliescu. In 1999, Romania began
NATO membership negotiations, leading to his official accession on 29 March 2004.
Ion Iliescu returned to the presidency in 2000, and
Traian Băsescu succeeded him in 2004, winning re-election in 2009. Romania became a member of the
European Union on 1 January 2007, marking a pivotal moment in its post-communist integration into Western political and economic structures. Political instability emerged in 2012 with
Băsescu’s suspension and reinstatement, highlighting ongoing governance challenges.
Klaus Iohannis was elected president in 2014 and re-elected in 2019. In 2015, the Colectiv nightclub fire spurred widespread protests, leading to Prime Minister
Victor Ponta's resignation and
Dacian Cioloș's appointment. Anti-corruption protests erupted again in 2017 and 2018, reflecting public frustration with
governmental corruption. The political landscape saw further fragmentation with the 2020 legislative elections, resulting in
Florin Cîțu's short-lived term as Prime Minister, which ended in a 2021 no-confidence vote and
Nicolae Ciucă’s subsequent appointment. Romania's geopolitical significance was underscored in 2022 when it supported
Ukrainian refugees during the
Russian invasion. In 2023, Romania engaged in regional security discussions amid ongoing geopolitical tensions, while the country continues to navigate his political and social developments leading up to the 2024 elections.
