Paraguay
Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is a landlocked
republican country in
South America. He is bordered by
Brazil to the North and Northeast,
Argentina to the South and Southwest, and
Bolivia to the North and Northwest. He is also the only South American country to recognize the
Republic of China as the real
China.
Paraguay's flag has a front and back, and they both look different. His
national days are 14 May and 15 May (Paraguay into getting
independence over the night!)
Paraguay was very confident in his early years as an independent country, he believed that he could conquer all South America! But then⦠The Paraguayan War happened, and he got totally humiliated. He got trauma, very depressing, and is still always saying negative things, he still has PTSD. Today, Paraguay looks like very normal nonexistent buffer state, but if vos into triggering his dark side nde could see the fury of the lion.
History
In 1810
Argentina rebelled against
Spain and tried to liberate Paraguay, however, he lost and retreated, but Paraguay got
independence by himself later on 11 May 1811. Paraguay's first
dictator,
JosΓ© Gaspar RodrΓguez de Francia, ruled with an
iron fist from 1814 to 1840,
isolating the country from the
world and enforcing his own harsh vision of a
socialist-leaning "utopian" society, earning him the nickname "El Supremo" for his grip on power. De Francia weakened the
Catholic Church and
colonial elites by imposing new laws, forced mixed-race marriages, isolated Paraguay from
South America, and brutally crushed a coup in 1820 by
executing or imprisoning its leaders.
After Francia's death in 1840, Paraguay was
ruled by military officers until
Carlos Antonio LΓ³pez, allegedly Francia's nephew, took power in 1841. Under LΓ³pez, Paraguay modernized, opened himself to foreign trade, signed a
non-aggression pact with
Argentina, and officially recognized Paraguay's independence on 25 November 1842. After LΓ³pez's death in 1862, his son,
Francisco Solano LΓ³pez, continued his father's policies,
centralizing power and controlling all aspects of public life. The LΓ³pez regime promoted
economic self-sufficiency through
protectionism,
developed militarily, and
expanded infrastructure. Despite portraying Paraguay as
democratic, the LΓ³pez family held near-total control. They ruled Paraguay like he was their personal estate, blurring the lines between public and private life.
After years of militarization and ambition, LΓ³pez became involved in a disastrous conflict that would change Paraguay forever. In 1864, Paraguay declared
war on
Empire of Brazil, and soon
Argentina and
Uruguay joined against him, forming the Triple Alliance. Paraguay fought fiercely and refused to surrender, even as his armies were destroyed and his people starved. What was known as the War of the Triple Alliance became a total catastrophe, Paraguay lost 90% of his adult
male population, his economy collapsed, and large parts of his territory were taken by Brazil and Argentina. In 1870, Francisco Solano LΓ³pez was finally defeated and killed in battle, famously shouting that he would die with his country, and bringing the war to an end. Paraguay was left devastated, occupied, and barely able to recover.
After the war, Paraguay was occupied by Brazil until 1876 and forced to accept a new
constitution in 1870, which reduced the power of the government and opened the country to foreign influence. Paraguay became weak, poor, and
politically unstable, with frequent coups and changes in leadership.
In the early 1900s, Paraguay slowly began to recover, but tensions grew with
Bolivia over the
Chaco region. This led to the Chaco War (1932-1935), where Paraguay, despite being smaller and poorer, managed to defeat Bolivia and gain most of the disputed territory, restoring some
pride to Paraguay.
However, instability continued, and in 1954,
Alfredo Stroessner seized power in a military coup. He ruled Paraguay as a dictator for 35 years, suppressing
opposition, controlling the country with fear, and aligning with other
anti-communist dictatorships. During this period, Paraguay built some infrastructure and dams.
In 1989, Stroessner was overthrown by his
own military, ending the dictatorship. Paraguay finally began to become
democratic, allowing elections and
political parties. Though still facing
corruption and poverty, Paraguay slowly opened himself again to the
world, no longer isolated like in the days of "El Supremo," and began trying to rebuild his place in South America.
