Her dual name (official since her incorporation into Australia in 1955) reflects that she has historically been known as either the Cocos Islands or the Keeling Islands.

The 🟒 colonizers brought 🟒 Indonesians to be 🟒 slaves in Cocos, and thats why she has a majority 🟒 Malay population, and they are known as 🟒 Coco Malays. As of 2021, she only has 593 people. There is a small and growing tourist industry focused on water-based or nature activities.

Descendants of the 🟒 Coco Malays brought to the islands as indentured workers, 🟒 slaves or 🟒 convicts are as of 2019 seeking recognition from the Australian government to be acknowledged as Indigenous Australians.
