Panama
Panama, officially the Republic of Panama, is a country that is split in half by a canal in
Central America. She is located in Latin America at the southern end of Central America, bordering South America. She is bordered by
Costa Rica to the west, and
Colombia to the east. The country is divided into ten provinces, along with the capital
Panama City, giving her a total of 28,640 square miles and making her the 4th largest country in
Central America. With a population of about only 4.218 million as of 2019, she ranks number 128 in population.
Although Panama is considered a high-income country, it remains a land of stark contrasts, driven by significant educational disparities. Between 2015 and 2017, poverty rates—defined as living on less than US$5.5 a day—decreased from 15.4% to an estimated 14.1%.
Being geographically in North and South America, as well as having access to the Pacific, Panama maintains membership in
OAS, and is a candidate for the
Pacific Alliance.
History
In November 1903 Panama, tacitly supported by the United States, proclaimed her independence against Colombia. In 1921, Panama went to war against Costa Rica due to a border conflict at around the
Coto Colorado River, speaking
Nationalism. Although in the end
USA intervened and shut up both of them.
Panama went through several personality disorders during the 1960s and 1980s. USA gave her freedom in 1989, when she became a
democratic nation.
USA also relinquished control of
Panama Canal Zone in 1999, as the new millennium arrived.
But eventually, the United Nations made everyone give up their colonies. Now Panama collects the rent for herself and sells coffee to
USA, as
Hawaii is the only
US state that can grow their own coffee. In 2016 secret documents were released and caused a scandalous crisis in different countries, which are known as the Panama Papers.
In 2023, massive protests and riots, many consisting of students and environmentalists, erupted, as the Panamanian government passed a 20-to-40-year mining contract with the
Canadian mining company
First Quantum Minerals. Schools were occupied, and police started using force when the protests won’t go down. More than 100 protestors and 40 policemen were injured, and 4 protestors died. But, in the end, the protestors had won, and the mine was closed. This wasn’t exactly a victory for the country as the environmentalist mob tell you though, because more than 30,000 people were affected by this, and many lost their jobs and received death threats from the mob. And, a mine that big can’t be shut down overnight, and will have more lasting environmental damage.
Culture
The culture of Panama derives from European music, art and traditions brought by the Spanish to Panama. Hegemonic forces have created hybrid forms blending
African and
Native American culture with
European culture. For example, the tamborito is a
Spanish dance with
African rhythms, themes and dance moves.
Dance is typical of the diverse cultures in Panama. The local folklore can be experienced at a multitude of festivals, through dances and traditions handed down from generation to generation. Local cities host live reggae en español, reggaeton, haitiano (compas), jazz, blues, salsa, reggae, and rock music performances.
Demographics
Panama had an estimated population of 4,351,267 in 2021. The proportion of the population aged less than 15 in 2010 was 29 percent. 64.5 percent of the population was between 15 and 65, with 6.6 percent of the population 65 years or older.
Trivia
- Panama celebrates two independence days, one in November 3 (1903) for their independence from
