Ma Clique
Template:CountryInfoMa Clique (Ma Family Army) or Xibei San Ma (西北三马, Three Mas of the Northwest) is a general historiographical term/collective name for
Hui Muslim warlords in Northwestern China who held absolute control over the provinces of
Qinghai,
Gansu, and
Ningxia starting from 1919 until 1928. There were three families in the Ma clique ("Ma" being a common Hui rendering of the common Muslim name "Muhammad"), each of them respectively controlled, parts of Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai.
History
The Ma clique was begun by
Muslim generals who served in the military of the
Qing Dynasty, most notably in the
Kansu Braves army, who fought in the
Boxer Rebellion against invading
foreign forces. He was continued by two generations of their descendants.
