Ma Clique (Ma Family Army) or Xibei San Ma (西北三马, Three Mas of the Northwest) is a general historiographical term/collective name for
Hui Muslim warlords in Northwestern China who held absolute control over the provinces of
Qinghai,
Gansu, and
Ningxia starting from 1919 until 1928. There were three families in the Ma clique ("Ma" being a common Hui rendering of the common Muslim name "Muhammad"), each of them respectively controlled, parts of Gansu, Ningxia and Qinghai.
The Three Mas were "Southern Mas" controlling Qinghai, "Northern Mas" in Ningxia and Gansu, and those of
Ma Anliang who had no territory. The three Ma families are not directly related.
Whether under the
Beiyang Government or later the
Nationalist Government, the Ma Clique was able to maintain his governing authority in the northwest region on the premise of recognizing the central government. At the same time, Ma also eliminated other forces that attempted to undermine his rule, such as the
Chinese Communist Party's
West Route Army, or the
Japanese military and his puppet governments in China during WWII.
History
The Ma clique was begun by
Muslim generals who served in the military of the
Qing Dynasty, most notably in the
Kansu Braves army, who fought in the
Boxer Rebellion against invading
foreign forces. He was continued by two generations of their descendants.
The collapse of the Qing dynasty in 1912 created a power vacuum in Western China. Hui Muslim leaders seized control of the region and established themselves as independent warlords. The region came under Hui warlord
Ma Qi's control, who founded his own army while maintaining control through brutal repression of rivals, including
Tibetans and other ethnic groups.
MORE WIP
Military
The Ma Clique maintained strong, well-disciplined armies composed largely of
Hui Muslim troops. These forces were equipped with modern weapons acquired through alliances with the
central government
or foreign powers.
