Facebook

From Heterodontosaurus Balls

Facebook is a social media and social networking service owned by 🟒 Meta Platforms, founded by 🟒 Mark Zuckerberg. Succeeding 🟒 MySpace, Facebook was once seen as a hegemon on the 🟒 internet, but now many users (especially the new generations) have moved to other sites. He is known for controversially keeping and selling user data.

Facebook can be accessed from devices with 🟒 internet connectivity, such as personal computers, tablets and smartphones. After registering, users can create a profile revealing information about themselves. They can post text, photos and multimedia which are shared with any other users who have agreed to be their friend or, with different privacy settings, publicly.

There are usually only two types of people on Facebook: 🟒 boomers and other old people, who gets easily tricked into thinking AI images are real (which caused Facebook to be flooded with AI images), and middle-aged moms posting minion memes. So Facebookk is mainly used by older people.

Facebook is built like a 🟒 book, and acts like a more casual version of 🟒 Reichtangle.

History

Backstory

While attending 🟒 Harvard University in 2003, 🟒 Zuckerberg made a website called 🟒 Facemash. The site was comparable to Hot or Not and used photos from online face books, asking users to choose the "hotter" person from two photos shown at a time. Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in his first four hours. Zuckerberg was reported and faced expulsion, but the charges were dropped.

A "face book" is a student directory featuring photos and personal information. Zuckerberg coded a new site known as 🟒 TheFacebook in January 2004, stating:

β€œβ€It is clear that the technology needed to create a 🟒 centralized Website is readily available … the benefits are many.
β€” 🟒 Mark Zuckerberg

Zuckerberg met with fellow 🟒 Harvard student 🟒 Eduardo Saverin, and they both agreed to invest $1,000. On 4 February 2004, TheFacebook was launched.

While initially limited to Harvard students, TheFacebook quickly caught fire β€” within a month, he had expanded to many other famous schools. Students loved the exclusive vibe and the simplicity of browsing profiles, poking friends, and flexing their social circles.

While Facebook was gaining steam, a trio of Harvard students: 🟒 Cameron and 🟒 Tyler Winklevoss, along with 🟒 Divya Narendra, claimed that Zuckerberg had stolen their idea. They had been working on a similar social networking site called HarvardConnection (later renamed 🟒 ConnectU) and had asked Zuckerberg to help code it. Instead, he allegedly delayed their project while building TheFacebook. This led to a lawsuit against Facebook.

Facebook

By late 2004, TheFacebook had over 1 million users, and the "The" was officially dropped in 2005 after acquiring the domain facebook.com for $200,000. That same year, Facebook received his first major investment: $12.7 million from 🟒 Accel Partners, fueling massive growth. By 2006, Facebook opened to anyone over the age of 13 with an email address. In 2007, 🟒 Microsoft bought a 1.6% stake for $240 million, valuing Facebook at $15 billion, which is a staggering figure for a company just three years old. And by 2008, Facebook had dethroned 🟒 MySpace as the top social network. The lawsuit with 🟒 ConnectU was also settled in 2008, the 🟒 Winklevoss twins and their lawyers reached a compromise; the twins would take $20 million in cash and the rest of the $65 million settlement in stock.

In 2009, Facebook introduced the "like" button. Seems small, but it was a game-changer. Engagement, popularity, and dopamine were suddenly just a click away.

A January 2009 🟒 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users. By 2010, Facebook had 500 million users. In April 2010 about 41.6% of the U.S. population had a Facebook account. That same year, the 🟒 Time magazine named 🟒 Zuckerberg Person of the Year.

Based on 🟒 ConsumersReports.org in May 2011, there are 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts. This breaks the website's rules.

But Facebook's growth started to slow down in some areas. He lost 7 million active users in the 🟒 United States of America and 🟒 Canada also in May 2011 relative to previous statistics.

In 2012, Facebook finally went public with an IPO (Initial Public Offering). It was one of the most anticipated tech IPOs ever β€” but also a rocky one:

  • Opening stock price: $38
  • Market cap: $104 billion

But tech glitches and overvaluation caused the price to tank temporarily after launch, leading to lawsuits and lots of finger-pointing. Still, Zuck walked away a billionaire many times over.

In 2012, 🟒 Zucky bought 🟒 Instagram for $1 billion Everyone thought he was crazy. It was just a photo app with like 13 employees. But in hindsight it was a genius move. Instagram would go on to be Facebook's crown jewel, especially with younger users.

As of 2024, 🟒 India has the most Facebook users.

Trivia

  • Facebook once censored a report on how school shooting statistics are inflated.
  • Facebook once labeled the Decoration of Independence as "hate speech".
  • When you sign up to FaceBook (as of June 2025), you need to complete a verification process. First, you need to do a puzzle to prove you're not a bot. Then, you need to take videos of your face rotating and upload it. Then you need to wait for a few hours to be confirmed, but usually you would just get permanently banned for no reason and the email/phone number you entered can't be used to register a new account.

Criticism

Facebook has been involved in many controversies over privacy, some of which have been about people being able to see personal information that other people post, and others are about companies and advertisers being able to see users' personal information. Facebook has sent ads to people based on the persons gender, age, income, 🟒 national origin and sexual orientation. Facebook also sells user's private info disguised as "data".

🟒 Scientists found that the more time people spent on Facebook over a two-week period, the worse they subsequently felt. On the surface, Facebook provides an invaluable resource for fulfilling the basic human need for social connection. Rather than enhancing well-being, however, these findings suggest that Facebook may undermine it.
