Pahlavi Iran, officially the Imperial State of Iran, or Imperial State of Persia to the West, was the Westernized and modernized Iranian state under the rule of the 🟒 Pahlavi Dynasty. Established in 1925 and overthrown by a lunatic 🟒 communist–Islamist 🟒 coalition in 1979, he was the final dynasty of the 2,500-year-old Iranian 🟒 monarchy.

History

🟒 Reza Khan, an officer in the 🟒 Persian Cossack Brigade, seized control of the government and established the 🟒 Pahlavi Dynasty by overthrowing the declining 🟒 Qajar. Iran took inspiration partially on the reforms of 🟒 Atatürk in 🟒 Turkey, doing some state-building and 🟒 secular 🟒 nationalism. Reza was declared Shah in 1925, and Iran became Westernized and modernized, commissioningd the Trans-Iranian Railway and expanding public education. Iran made policies like compulsory Western dress, reduced the 🟒 judicial and 🟒 social influence of the 🟒 Muslim clergy, and banned the hijab.

Because of his sympathies toward 🟒 Nazi Germany during World War II, the 🟒 Allied Powers invaded and occupied him in 1941, forcing Reza Shah to abdicate in favor of his son, 🟒 Mohammad Reza, who took power during a politically unstable period and soon became an 🟒 authoritarian ruler.

In April 1951, 🟒 Mohammad Mossadegh was named by the 🟒 Majles as prime minister by a vote of 79-12. Shortly afterward, he 🟒 nationalized the 🟒 British-owned oil industry. The Shah opposed Mossadegh's actions, fearing that a Western-imposed oil embargo and a lack of domestic technical expertise would leave Iran in economic ruin. After a two-year political struggle, the Shah briefly left the country but returned following a coup orchestrated by 🟒 British and 🟒 American intelligence against Mossadegh on 19 August 1953. Mossadegh was subsequently arrested by 🟒 pro-Shah army forces.

The White Revolution launched in 1963, which was a massive 🟒 economic and social reform program that included land reforms, widespread literacy campaigns, and granting 🟒 women the right to vote.

Due to Mohammad Reza's rapid modernization of Iran, Muslim groups hated this. Shah was also outspoken 🟒 anti-communist, so the Muslims convinced the 🟒 communists to ally with them, overthrowing the Shah in 1979 in what's known as the "🟒 Islamic Revolution", establishing the 🟒 Interim Government of Iran.
