Empire of Japan, officially Great Japanese Empire (大日本帝國, Dai-Nippon Teikoku) was an East Asian powerful state, especially during 🏳️ World War 2. He enjoyed large amounts of influence, and he could into controllings and 🏳️ rapings the 🏳️ Korea, 🏳️ Manchuria, and 🏳️ Taiwan. He was one of the most powerful and influential non-European empires and hated the Westerners.

At his peak, the Empire of Japan was one of the largest empires in history, covering most of the western 🏳️ Pacific Ocean including large parts of 🏳️ East Asia, 🏳️ Southeast Asia, and 🏳️ Oceania.

He can be considered the father of modern 🏳️ Japan.

歴史 (History)

明治時代 (Meiji Period)

Further Information: 🏳️ Meijism

The 🏳️ Tokugawa was killed by the Empire of Japan in the Boshin War in 1869.

On April 6, 1868, 🏳️ Emperor Meiji took the imperial oath, announcing thorough reforms, announcing sweeping reforms such as moving the capital from 🏳️ Kyoto to 🏳️ Tokyo, abolishing 🏳️ feudal systems such as Han (藩) system, and opening up to other countries. This marked the beginning of Japan's modernization.

Japan paid the samurais a bunch of money called the stipend, and this payment varied depending on the rank of the samurai. It was basically a bribe to keep them quiet. However, this costed the government hugely so in 1871 Japan began to phase it out.

In 1872, railways began popping up all around Japan, textile factories too. Most of it was paid by the state.

In 1875, Japan imposed an unequal treaty on 🏳️ Korea after sensing the opportunity to do so when 🏳️ America left the region. Three Korean ports were opened to trade, and Japanese citizens won extra territoriality, and Korea was declared independent from 🏳️ Chinese hegemony. Western powers swooped in to claim their own treaties on Korea as well. Japan helped Korea to modernize, but this cozying up to Japan made China unhappy.

The samurai weren't special people anymore. They were no longer at the top of society, received no money and aren't even the honorable defenders of Japan since anyone can join the army now. So, the upset samurais made an uprising in 1877, but was crushed.

In 1882, the Imo Incident happened where Korean soldiers revolted against their Japanese military advisors and also their Japan-loving Korean overlords. Japan and China both sent troops to put down the rebellion but soon China realigned Korea with himself, forcing Japan to lower his military presence.

In 1884 pro-Japan Koreans tried to coup but failed, so they fled to Japan. Japan somehow used this as an excuse and sent troops onto the Korean Peninsula. China was distracted by war with 🏳️ Frenchie so Japan was able to pressure him into singing 🏳️ Tientsin Agreement in 1885, which stated that neither Jap or Sino could have major military presence in Korea. If one side wants to reintroduce soldiers, they would have to inform the other.

Despite all the goods of modernization, it still had social consequences. Political parties and groups began to emerge, making more social tensions. As a result of the actions, the 🏳️ Meiji Constitution was established in 1889, which invokes a parliament composed of the House of Aristocracy (Kizoku-in) and the House of Representatives (Shūgi-in), which parliament was functioning a year later, military designations, martial law and the right of pardon. The Meiji constitution also defined the official name of the Japanese state called Dai-Nippon Teikoku.

By 1894, Japan has successfully negotiated 🏳️ reforms in regards to the unequal treaties imposed on him by the West, meaning that Jap now has enough money for proper military commitments in Korea. In June, a rebellion against Korea's government happened, so at Korea's request China sent 2000 troops without informing Japan, hoping to put down the rebellion before Japan noticed. But oh did Japan notice, which enraged him and he sent 8000 troops to crush the rebellion. Japan is now in full occupation of Korea, and Korea asked him to leave. But instead of leaving, Japan established a puppet regime and demanded that Chinese forces withdraw. China refused to recognize the new government, and tensions exploded into the First Sino-Japanese War, which the Chinese lost severely due to their weak navy. The Japanese committed atrocities towards the Koreans and Chinese with huge massacres.

On April 17, 1895, the 🏳️ Qing Dynasty signed the humiliating Treaty of 🏳️ Shimonoseki with Japan for losing the Sino-Japanese War. This treaty was far harsher than the treaties imposed by Western powers, and it made China to pay up all the expenses Japan spend during the war. China ceded 🏳️ Taiwan, 🏳️ Penghu, and 🏳️ Liaodong, paid 200 million taels indemnity, and opened treaty ports. This treaty accelerated 🏳️ imperialist partitioning of China. However, 🏳️ Russia, 🏳️ Germany and 🏳️ France advised Japan do renounce Liaodong on April 23, and Japan, anxious to keep his goodwill, did so by treaty on 8 November, but not before he had extorted 30 million taels of silver. The Japanese public was outraged at this handover.

Japan joined in the 🏳️ Eight-Nation Alliance in 1900 to fight the 🏳️ Boxer Movement, and Japan provided the most ships and troops. Japan wants to be recognized as equal to the western empires, but still no one took him seriously. Except for the 🏳️ British Empire. In 1902, Japan and Britain entered an alliance, the Anglo-Japanese alliance. Britain recognized Japan as a world power, something no other nation did. In 1904, Japan did a sneak attack on 🏳️ Russian Empire, destroying him completely in 1905. This was partially because Russia refused to recognize Japan as equals.

In 1910, 🏳️ Japanese Korea was annexed. In 1912, 🏳️ Emperor Meiji dies.

In 1914, 🏳️ Britain called Japan to WWI, which Japan used as an excuse to ansuchless all the 🏳️ German colonies in the 🏳️ Pacific Ocean. In 1915, Japan made the 21 Demands and tried to get 🏳️ Republic of China to agree to them, which would turn China into a Japanese protectorate. Japan tried to keep this secret from Western powers. However, the Chinese did a boycott on Japanese goods and Britain no longer trusts Japan. With the First World War underway, Japan's position was strong and Britain's was weak; nevertheless, Britain (and the 🏳️ US) forced Japan to drop the fifth set of demands that would have given Japan a large measure of control over the entire Chinese economy and ended the Open Door Policy. In the end, only 13 of 21 demands were agreed upon.

Japan was invited to draft the Treaty of Versailles and join the 🏳️ League of Nations after WWI ended in 1918. Japan asked the League to regard all races as equal, but it was formally rejected by America (on behalf Britain, since Britain didn't want to consider his 🏳️ colonies as equal to him). In 1920, Britain left the Anglo-Japanese alliance.

From 1921-1922, UK and US held the 🏳️ Washington Naval Conference, which limited Japan's large military ships. In 1923 an earthquake killed 150,000. The economy collapsed, and the military became much more influential in politics.

昭和時代 (Shōwa Period)

In 1926 🏳️ Hirohito became emperor, and emperor worship became more common and radicalized.

The Shōwa financial crisis was a financial panic in 1927, during the first year of the reign of Emperor Hirohito. It was a precursor of the Great Depression. It brought down the government of Prime Minister 🏳️ Wakatsuki Reijirō and led to the domination of the 🏳️ Zaibatsu over the Japanese banking industry.

第二次世界大戦 (World War II)

Japan wanted to conquer 🏳️ China. In 1931, he set up a fake railway incident as an excuse to invade and conquer 🏳️ Manchuria, which was under the 🏳️ Fengtian Clique. The invasion was successful and the puppet state of 🏳️ Manchukuo was set up, integrated into the Japanese Empire and starting a trade circle between Manchukuo, 🏳️ Korea and Japan, making Japan have great economy.

But just Manchuria was not enough. On July 7, 1937, Japan launched a full on invasion of 🏳️ China, starting the Second Sino-Japanese War. Japan was successful at first, getting hold of many Chinese clay and massacred everywhere they go, from 🏳️ Shanghai to 🏳️ Nanking. The notorious Rape of Nanking was a mass killing and 🏳️ raping of Chinese civilians by the Japanese from 1937 to 1938. Many Japanese still deny it ever happened to this day.

But the war in China soon reached stalemate, with fewer advancements than Japan had hoped. In order to get enough resources to keep invading China, Japan launched an invasion of Southeast Asia in the early 1940s. Japan first invaded 🏳️ French Indochina (under de-jure 🏳️ Vichy France control) in September 1940.

Japan's actual attack on the 🏳️ United States started with the surprise Attack of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Shortly afterwards America declared war on Japan, and this was considered Japan's grave mistake.

The US quickly responded and began to rapidly take all the ocean territory that Japan had conquered during the WWII. But Japan still would not surrender, and was planning to unleash biological warfare on American soil. So in August 1945 USA dropped two nuclear bombs on the cities of 🏳️ Hiroshima and 🏳️ Nagasaki. This finally got Japan to surrender unconditionally.
