Ba'athist Syria
Syria, officially the violent Syrian Arab Republic is a country in the Middle East who is an embattled state, embroiled in a heinous war. He is a raging and burning ball of chaos. Syria is currently suspended from the Arab League and
OIC, and is one of the most popular destination for
UN Peacekeeping programs.
The name “Syria” historically referred to a wider region, broadly synonymous with the Levant, and known in Arabic as al-Sham. The modern state encompasses the sites of several ancient kingdoms and empires
History
Ba’athist Coup and Control
In 1963, Ba'athists launched a coup known as the March Revolution and seized power, ending the
Second Syrian Republic. Now, the new Syria will either stand strong or fall, and this next year or so is his chance to show the world he won't give up.
After a bloodless coup d'état led by General Hafez al-Assad on 13 November 1970 (known as the “Corrective Movement”), Syria reformed himself.
Egypt wanted to retry another union with
Syria with
Libya involved, forming the
Federation of Arab Republics in 1972. Allied with Egypt, Syria was later was one of the countries that had attacked
Israel, the result of defeat in the war lead to Israel occupying some Syrian clay known as the
Golan Heights from 1967 up to this day. Syria is still pissed off about it. The region is now disputed
UN territory between the two, even if most countryballs had internationally recognized it for Syria. The
federation disbanded in 1977 because
Libya left.
Hafez al-Assad held elections, but they were not competitive. The
Ba'ath Party held total control. His governance included significant state-led reforms that modernized parts of the economy and infrastructure, which some viewed positively. In the late 1990s, there were discussions about political reforms, but these were limited and did not constitute a true
democratic process. Before his death, Hafez al-Assad did pave the way for his son,
Bashar al-Assad, to succeed him, a move that maintained the family's grip on power rather than transitioning to a democratic system.
Syrian Civil War
In 2011, during the Arab Spring, Syriaball erupted into a civil war between three rival factions: Kurdistan Forces,
Syrian Government, and
Syrian Rebels (initially
pro-democracy, later become fragmented because of the rise of
Islamist groups). Though many have exposed
USA and
Saudi Arabia of funding the democratic rebels. Regardless, USA and allies cannot into caring. The Government then warned the west of the threat of the
Islamic State, which the west largely dismissed.
Under the Obama and
Clinton doctrines, the
Islamic State sought to rule a caliphate in Syria if the
Assad regime
was defeated. But,
Iran and
Russia have made it clear that Assad is going nowhere. Huge stockpiles of chemical weapons and elements of the
Al-Qaeda terrorist group posed regional threats. The
Christians in Syria have also been slaughtered in the thousands after losing stability.
A bunch of countries decided to intervene and it became the ground for a proxy war between Russia,
USA and
Türkiye who are each trying to gear Syria to their vision of his future. In April 2018, Syria supposedly used chemical weapons on his own citizens again. In response to this,
USA,
United Kingdom,
France, and others launched combined strikes on Syria’s clay. This action resulted in escalated tensions between
USA and
Russia, the latter clearly stating not to launch those kinds of strikes on Syria. An emergency meeting between the two had to be called to ease the tension.
Geography
Syria is bordered by Turkey to the north and northwest,
Jordan to the south and southeast,
Iraq to the east and southeast, and
Lebanon and then
Israel to the southwest.
Syria is spread across an area of 185,180 square kilometres (71,500 sq mi), making it 87th largest country in the world.
Syria contains four terrestrial ecoregions: Syrian Xeric Grasslands and Shrublands,
Eastern Mediterranean Conifer-Sclerophyllous-Broadleaf Forests,
Southern Anatolian Montane Conifer and Deciduous Forests, and
Mesopotamian Shrub Desert.
