Andorra

Andorra, officially the Principality of Andorra, is a tiny and mountainous sovereign landlocked diarchy located in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Pyrenees, sandwiched between France and Spain. He is known for his slippery mountains and ski resorts. 🎿

Andorra is ruled by a unique co-principality arrangement that endured for centuries, with successive counts and bishops inheriting their roles. Andorra remained relatively isolated and undeveloped throughout much of his history, with his economy based primarily on agriculture and shepherding.

History

In the 1200s, what is now Andorra was disputed between the 🟢 County of Urgell and 🟢 County of Foix. The two counties wwere in a long dispute about who owns this mountainous region. Neither side wanted a full-scale war, so they agreed on a compromise. In 1278, they signed an agreement known as the Paréage of Andorra. And in that moment, Andorra was created.

The compromise was that Andorra would be ruled by two rulers: the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix. This system of dual rule led to pretty interesting situations. In the late 15th century, Foix merged with the nearby 🟢 Kingdom of Navarre, and about a century later, the King of Navarre became the King of France, which made one of the co-princes of Andorra the King of France, which became one of the main reasons Andorra survived throughout the ages, by suddenly having the protection of a powerful kingdom.

During the time of Bonapart, France briefly annexed Andorra, but he soon restored his independence, famously calling him a political curiosity that should be preserved. When France abolished monarchy, the royal title connecting to Andorra transferred to the President of France. During both World Wars, no one bothered to attack Andorra because he was too small, insignificant and mountainous to be worth the trouble.

In the 20th century, Andorra began to modernize and open up to the outside world. Tourism became increasingly important to his economy, as visitors flocked to the picturesque mountain landscapes for skiing and hiking. Today, one of Andorra's two co-heads-of-state is indirectly chosen by the citizens of another nation. Nowadays, the power of the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France is mostly symbolic, and Andorra is a modern independent country who joined the United Nations in 1993.

El gran Carlemany

El gran Carlemany (The Great Charlemagne) is the national anthem of the Principality of Andorra. Enric Marfany Bons composed the music, while the lyrics were authored by Joan Benlloch i Vivó, written in a first-person narrative from the point of view of Andorra. It was adopted as the national anthem on 8 September 1921, which is also the national day of Andorra. The lyrics make reference to several key aspects of Andorran culture and history, such as the heritage of the Carolingian Empire.
