Switzerland

The Swiss Confederation, more commonly known as Switzerland, is a small country surrounded in the mountains. Switzerland is known for her neutrality, never picking a side in wars. Switzerland is also known for her chocolates and cheeses.

Switzerland has among the best quality of life of everyone, plus political stability and stable economy. She is on of the best countries to live in.

History

In 1848, Switzerland became a federal state with a new constitution. She grew economically with industries like textiles and machinery. Even during World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945) Switzerland stayed neutral. But she faced issues about her banking laws and accusations of helping the German Third Reich.

Many people think the reason why Switzerland stayed neutral in WWII is because she is peaceful, but that's not really the case. In fact, she shot down planes from both sides when they entered her airspace, no matter if they're Allied or Axis, and the pilots were imprisoned in the same camps no matter which side they belonged to. Switzerland even shot down her own planes twice accidentally. Swiss also wanted to make profits from both sides, so she took gold from the Nazis and stolen from Jews and occupied countries. But she was also trading with the Allied nations of USA and UK. When Jews came begging for refuge, Switzerland turned them away because they simply weren't profitable.

After World War II, Switzerland progressed economically and politically. In 1947, she joined the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), showing her support for global trade.

In 1968, Switzerland accidentally fired five artillery shells into Liechtenstein's only ski resort. Swiss women gained federal voting rights in 1971. In 1976, 75 Swiss soldiers took a wrong turn while in a training exercise and invaded Liechtenstein. The locals offered the soldiers beer, but the soldiers realized their mistake, declined the offer, and walked back into Swiss land. In 1985, Switzerland fired an anti-aircraft missile into Liechtenstein and started a forest fire there, but she did apologize and pay for the damages. Despite her neutrality policy, Switzerland joined the United Nations in 2002.

Switzerland introduced euro banknotes and coins in 2002, replacing older Swiss currency denominations.

In 2007, Switzerland accidentally invaded Liechtenstein again after 170 Swiss soldiers took a wrong turn in some bad weather. Liechtenstein didn't even notice until Switzerland apologized, and Liechtenstein said it wasn't a big deal, as "it's not like they invaded with attack helicopters."

Despite the global financial crisis in 2008, Switzerland stayed economically stable compared to other nations. Then, in 2014, Swiss voters barely agreed to limit immigration from European Union countries, causing tension with the EU.
