Cocos (Keeling) Islands is an
Australian external territory in the
Indian Ocean, comprising a small archipelago approximately midway between Australia and
Sri Lanka, near the coast of
Indonesia. Her dual name (official since her incorporation into Australia in 1955) reflects that she has historically been known as either the Cocos Islands or the Keeling Islands.
The
colonizers brought
Indonesians to be
slaves in Cocos, and thats why she has a majority
Malay population, and they are known as
Coco Malays. As of 2021, she only has 593 people. There is a small and growing tourist industry focused on water-based or nature activities.
Although she is an Australian territory, the culture of the islands has extensive influences from
Malaysia and
Indonesia due to her predominantly ethnic Malay population.

On 23 November 1955, the Coco Islands were transferred from the
United Kingdom/
British Empire to the
Commonwealth of Australia. Immediately before the transfer the islands were part of
Colony of Singapore.
In the first decade of the 21st century, a series of disputes have occurred between the
Muslim and the non-Muslim population of the islands.
