Algeria, officially full name People's Democratic Republic of Algeria, is a huge country located in northern Africa. He is the 10th largest country in the world, and also borders the 
Mediterranean Sea towards the north.
History
After gaining independence from 
France in 1962, Algeria adopted a 
socialist model. But this was dropped in 1979 as the entire 
communist world in Africa was collapsing.
A growing 
Islamic movement and 
no political freedom are not good things together. In the first round of 
parliamentary elections in 1991, the 
Islamic Salvation Front (FIS) was won. But, to prevent the creation of an 
Islamic State, the army led a coup and canceled the election process in 1992, which led to a violent conflict between the government and Islamist militants who are loyal to the FIS. This caused the Algerian Civil War, which lasted for 10 years and 4 weeks. In Algeria, this was known as the "Black Decade". Finally, the war ended in 2002 and the victorious government offered amnesty to militants who renounced violence.
