Afghanistan, officially the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, is a landlocked Islamist theocratic country located at the crossroads of Central Asia and South Asia. He is currently ruled by the Taliban, a designated jihadist terrorist group. The country has the worst human rights ever, and also have no rights for women.

Because the Taliban hates industry, Afghanistan uses traditional, old-fashioned ways of building up his economy. This makes Afghanistan one of the few countries that don't use a capitalist nor socialist system. He is also trying to open himself up and advocate for tourism (despite being ran by a Jihadist government), so he can get his hands on the precious foreign currency to fund his projects.

Afghanistan is rich in natural resources, including lithium, iron, zinc, and copper. He is the second-largest producer of cannabis resin, and third largest of both saffron and cashmere. Due to the effects of war in recent decades, he has dealt with high levels of terrorism, poverty, and child malnutrition. Afghanistan remains among the world's least developed countries, ranking 182nd on the Human Development Index as of 2025. Afghanistan's gross domestic product (GDP) is $81 billion by purchasing power parity and $20.1 billion by nominal values. Per capita, his GDP is among the lowest of any country as of 2020.

Afghanistan is often called the "graveyard of empires". This nickname originates from several historical examples of foreign powers who were unable to achieve military victory in Afghanistan during the modern period, including British Empire, Soviet Union and, most recently, United States.

History

The Taliban were able to retake Afghanistan as the US and NATO troops started to pull out. With USA completing his withdrawal by 30 August 2021, the chaotic scenes at Kabul's airport shocked the world, as desperate citizens clung to departing planes, trying to flee Taliban's rule.

In consequence of the Taliban takeover, US and EU have taken away financial support and slapped on UN sanctions. Since the 2000s, Afghanistan has been relying on western currencies, without that, people are already starving and are relying on fruits and leftovers. Afghanistan is also suffering an economic crisis. As to response, Afghanistan banned foreign currencies in response with the Taliban stating that the "economic situation and national interests in the country require that all Afghans use Afghani currency in their every trade". Throughout late 2021, Afghan"s economy began collapsing under international sanctions and frozen assets. The world largely refused to recognize Taliban as the legitimate ruler of Afghanistan, isolating him politically and economically.

In early 2022, Afghan Talibanball struggled to maintain control as ISIS-K, a local extremist rival, launched deadly attacks, creating further instability. Meanwhile, PR China and Pakistan stepped in, offering economic deals, while RussiaBall quietly supported Taliban as a counterweight to USA's influence in the region.

By mid-2022, internal unrest grew. Protests erupted, especially from Afghanistan's women and youth, who resisted Taliban's harsh policies. A 4.0-kilometre (2.5 mi) deep earthquake measuring magnitude (Mw ) 6.2 struck southeastern Afghanistan on 22 June 2022 at 01:24:36 AFT (on 21 June 2022 at 20:54:36 UTC). The economic crisis deepened into 2023, with food shortages and unemployment surging. By late 2023, Taliban still held power, but the people of Afghanistan were suffering under famine-like conditions, compounded by harsh winter months.

In March 2023, cannabis production was banned.

On 27 May 2023 Afghanistan had some border clashes with Iran, leaving at least 3 dead. Official statement issued by both sides as to how the clashes took place differed significantly, with each side blaming the other. Afghanistan claims that Iran was shooting at his soldiers. Iran claims that the clashes began when a group of armed drug smugglers attempted to cross into his clay, so he fired on them. Local Afghan forces, unaware of what was happening, assumed that the Iranian forces were attacking them, and a clash ensued.

In October 2023, Pakistan ordered the expulsion of Afghans from his clay. Iran also decided to deport Afghan refugees back to Afghanistan. Taliban authorities condemned the deportations of Afghans as an "inhuman act."

On 1 October 2025, Afghanistan conducted a total internet shutdown for 48 hours. Many things were effected, such as airplane flights.

Economy

Afghanistan imports over $7 billion worth of goods but exports only $784 million, mainly fruits and nuts. He also has $2.8 billion in external debt. Afghan rugs are one of Afghanistan's main exports. The service sector contributed the most to the GDP (55.9%) followed by agriculture (23%) and industry (21.1%)

The GDP of Afghanistan is estimated to have dropped by 20% following the Taliban return to power. Following this, after months of free-fall, the Afghan economy began stabilizing, as a result of the Taliban's restrictions on smuggled imports, limits on banking transactions, and UN aid. In 2023, the Afghan economy began seeing signs of revival. This has also been followed by stable exchange rates, low inflation, stable revenue collection, and the rise of trade in exports. In the third quarter of 2023, the Afghani rose to be the best performing currency in the world, climbing over 9% against the US dollar.

Agricultural production is the backbone of Afghanistan's economy and has traditionally dominated it, employing about 40% of the workforce as of 2018 while Afghanistan was still free. He is known for producing pomegranates, grapes, apricots, melons, and several other fresh and dry fruits. He also became the world's top producer of cannabis in 2010, that is until March 2023 when it was banned.

Afghanistan's natural resources include coal, copper, iron ore, lithium, uranium, rare earth elements, chromite, gold, zinc, talc, barite, sulfur, lead, marble, precious and semi-precious stones, natural gas, and petroleum. This makes mining in Afghanistan an income source.
